HUNTINGTON STATION, NY — A 42-year-old man was convicted of his fourth DWI within 10 years after prosecutors said he drove drunk into a Huntington Station parking lot with a blood alcohol content nearly three times the legal limit.
Walter Danilo Perez Sanchez, a Guatemalan national, was found guilty Wednesday after a jury trial of aggravated driving while intoxicated and other charges, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said.
Perez Sanchez had a blood alcohol content of .22 percent after the March 20, 2025, incident, prosecutors said.
According to prosecutors, a witness called 911 to report three men fighting in a parking lot on New York Avenue in Huntington Station.
When Suffolk County police officers responded, their investigation into the fight became a DWI investigation after police learned Perez Sanchez had driven a silver Toyota RAV4 into the parking lot while intoxicated, prosecutors said.
Officers said Perez Sanchez had the odor of alcohol on his breath, bloodshot and glassy eyes, slurred speech, and was unsteady on his feet, prosecutors said.
Perez Sanchez also performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests, prosecutors said. He was taken to Huntington Hospital, where he consented to a blood test that showed his blood alcohol content was .22 percent, prosecutors said.
Perez Sanchez was found guilty, the DA said, of aggravated driving while intoxicated, a Class D felony; driving while intoxicated, a Class D felony; unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, an unclassified misdemeanor; and circumventing an interlock device, a Class A misdemeanor.
He was previously convicted of DWI on Nov. 25, 2019, and March 16, 2023, prosecutors said. In his most recent prior conviction, dated April 9, 2024, Perez Sanchez pleaded guilty to two counts of driving while intoxicated, both Class D felonies, prosecutors said.
After the conviction, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office asked that Perez Sanchez be remanded into custody, prosecutors said. The court denied the request and allowed him to remain released, prosecutors said.
Perez Sanchez is due back in court for sentencing on July 27. He faces up to 2⅓ to 7 years in prison, prosecutors said.
He is represented by The Legal Aid Society, which did not immediately respond to Patch's request for comment.
“This defendant had three prior DWI convictions and still chose to drive drunk, demonstrating a continued disregard for our laws,” Tierney said. “His prior arrests have clearly failed to deter further criminal conduct.”
