Huntington Man Fled Traffic Stop, Crashed SUV, Had Drugs: Police

HUNTINGTON STATION, NY — A Huntington man fled a traffic stop, crashed into another vehicle and ran from police before officers found him with drugs Thursday night in Huntington Station, Suffolk County police said.

A Second Precinct patrol officer attempted to stop a Chevrolet SUV that was stopped in the roadway in front of 1820 New York Ave. at about 9:20 p.m., police said.

The driver, Rodlain Surpris, fled in the vehicle, police said.

The Chevrolet continued east on Pulaski Road, and Surpris attempted to turn right onto Park Avenue when the SUV struck a Jeep, police said.

The Chevrolet was disabled in the crash, and Surpris fled on foot, police said.

Police located Surpris a short time later and took him into custody around 9:26 p.m., police said. He was found to have drugs in his possession, police said.

Surpris, 36, of Huntington, was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, police said.

He was also cited for unlawful fleeing, reckless driving, operating a vehicle without a required ignition interlock device and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, police said.

The Chevrolet was impounded, police said.

Surpris was held overnight and is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Central Islip.
