HAUPPAUGE, NY — A Maplewood Intermediate School fifth-grader has been named the countywide winner of Suffolk County’s “Be Pool Smart” Pool Safety Poster Contest.
Jessa Bruno was recognized for artwork that will be used by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services to promote pool safety awareness across the county, according to Suffolk County District 16 Legislator Rebecca Sanin.
The annual contest encourages students to create original artwork focused on pool safety, to help families and communities understand the importance of safe practices around water.
“Every year, our office receives thoughtful and creative submissions from students across District 16, making the selection process incredibly difficult,” Sanin said. “Jessa's artwork stood out for its creativity, message, and impact. To see her represent District 16 and ultimately be recognized as the countywide winner is a tremendous source of pride for our entire community.”
Sanin also recognized Jessa’s mother, Tara Bruno, and her art teacher, Ashlyn Piercey-Gilhooly, for supporting and encouraging her.
“We are proud of the example Jessa has set and grateful that she shared her talents with our community,” Sanin said. “I also want to recognize her mother, Tara, and her art teacher, Ms. Ashlyn Piercey-Gilhooly, for their support and encouragement. Congratulations, Jessa, on this well-deserved honor. We look forward to all you will accomplish in the future.”
