SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Suffolk County health officials issued an advisory against bathing at 64 beaches Monday after heavy rainfall, including 41 beaches in Babylon, Huntington, Islip and Smithtown.
The Suffolk County Department of Health Services said the advisory is based on the potential that bacteria levels at the beaches exceed New York State standards. The advisory is expected to be lifted on July 8, at 11:59 p.m.
The beaches under advisory in Huntington are:
Huntington
Health officials said the affected beaches are in areas heavily influenced by stormwater runoff from surrounding watersheds or nearby tributaries. Some are also in enclosed embayments with limited tidal flushing.
Bathing and other water contact should be avoided in affected areas until the waters have been flushed by two successive tidal cycles, at least 24 hours after the rain has ended, officials said.
