Multiple Suffolk Beaches Closed After High Bacteria Levels Detected

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Four Suffolk County beaches have been closed to swimming after testing found bacteria levels exceeding acceptable standards, health officials announced Wednesday.

The beaches closed to bathing are:

• Sayville Marina Park beach in Sayville
• Bayport Beach in Bayport
• Gold Star Battalion Beach in Huntington
• Ronkonkoma Beach at Lake Ronkonkoma in the Town of Islip

Swimming in bacteria-contaminated water can cause gastrointestinal illness and infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat, Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott said.

The beaches will reopen after additional testing shows bacteria levels have fallen within acceptable limits, officials said.
