Multiple Suffolk Beaches Closed After High Bacteria Levels Detected

Beaches in Sayville, Bayport and Huntington will remain closed until testing shows bacteria have returned to acceptable levels.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Four Suffolk County beaches have been closed to swimming after testing found bacteria levels exceeding acceptable standards, health officials announced Wednesday.

Swimming in bacteria-contaminated water can cause gastrointestinal illness and infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat, Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. Gregson Pigott said.

The beaches will reopen after additional testing shows bacteria levels have fallen within acceptable limits, officials said.

Residents can receive the latest information about beach closures by calling Suffolk County's Bathing Beach Hotline at 631-852-5822. The county Office of Ecology can also be reached during business hours at 631-852-5760.
