SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — Mosquito samples collected in Northport, Melville, Dix Hills, Lindenhurst and Bay Shore are among seven new samples that tested positive for West Nile virus, Suffolk County health officials said Friday.
The Suffolk County Department of Health Services said the positive samples included one from Northport, one from Melville, two from Dix Hills, one from Lindenhurst and one from Bay Shore. Another positive sample was collected in Mastic Beach.
All seven were identified as Culex pipiens-restuans mosquitoes.
The new findings bring the number of mosquito samples that have tested positive for West Nile virus in Suffolk County this season to 29. Three mosquito samples have also tested positive for Jamestown Canyon virus.
Health officials also said that a dead bird found Aug. 5 in Nesconset tested positive for West Nile virus. It is the third dead bird to test positive in Suffolk this season. Two dead crows found June 24 in Ronkonkoma previously tested positive.
No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Suffolk County this year, officials said.
West Nile virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people who become infected experience mild or no symptoms, according to health officials.
Some people can develop more serious symptoms, including headache, neck stiffness, vision loss, high fever, confusion, muscle weakness and paralysis. In severe cases, the virus can be fatal.
Health officials are urging residents to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. People aged 50 and older, and those with compromised immune systems, are particularly encouraged to protect themselves.
Dead birds can indicate the presence of West Nile virus. Residents who find a dead bird on their property can contact the Suffolk County Department of Health Services Bureau of Public Health Protection at 631-852-5999 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Officials encourage residents to submit a photo of the bird.
Mosquito problems can be reported to the Suffolk County Department of Public Works Division of Vector Control at 631-852-4270.
