Suffolk County Student Athlete Of The Week: John Glenn’s Brianna Mauro

ELWOOD, NY — Brianna Mauro's John Glenn flag football career was short in years, but big in impact.

The Elwood-John H. Glenn High School Class of 2026 graduate was recently selected by the New York State Sportswriters Association to the flag football All-State team as a first-team defensive player.

This summer, Patch is looking back at the student-athletes who helped define the 2025-26 sports seasons across Suffolk County. This week's Suffolk County Student Athlete of the Week is Mauro, who helped set the foundation for one of John Glenn's newest athletic programs.

Mauro helped lead the Knights to two playoff appearances and a county championship in the school's first two seasons as a flag football program.

Her senior season ended with a long list of honors. In addition to being named first-team All-State on defense, Mauro earned All-County and All-Academic recognition, was named Suffolk County Co-Defensive Most Valuable Player, received the Golden Seven Award and was recognized as a Newsday Top 50 player.

Coach Craig Ash said Mauro's value to the program went beyond the awards.

"Brianna has been the cornerstone of the team," Ash said. "She has set the standard for what it truly means to be a John Glenn flag football player."

For a program still in its early years, Mauro's career helped establish expectations quickly. The Knights did not just become competitive; they became a championship team, with Mauro anchoring the defense and helping define the team's identity.

Her recognition as a first-team All-State defensive player capped a career marked by leadership, consistency and impact on both the field and in the classroom.

Mauro leaves John Glenn as one of the first major standouts of the school's flag football era — a player whose legacy will be tied not only to individual honors, but to helping build the program from the beginning.
