1. 3 Young Mama Cats Still Waiting After Kittens Adopted: Huntington Adoptable Pet Of The Week (patch.com) — Huntington-area residents are being urged to consider three young mother cats at Grateful Paw Cat Shelter in East Northport, whose kittens have all been adopted while they remain behind. Cookie, Sarabi and Miel are healthy, affectionate and still very kitten-like themselves, and the shelter hopes local families will give them the loving Huntington-area homes they deserve.
2. West Nile Virus Cases In Mosquitoes Climb Across Suffolk (patch.com) — Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus have been found in several Huntington hamlets, including Cold Spring Harbor, Northport, Greenlawn, Dix Hills and Melville, as part of a wider Suffolk County uptick. Health officials are urging Huntington residents, especially older adults and those with weaker immune systems, to take extra precautions against mosquito bites and to report dead birds or mosquito problems to county agencies.
3. MTA push for new housing at LIRR stations goes off the rails (libn.com) — Hundreds of new apartments were quietly proposed for parking lots around Huntington Station's LIRR stop, along with a 1,000-space garage, as part of an MTA transit-oriented housing study. After Supervisor Ed Smyth and other Long Island officials objected to what they saw as a top-down plan from Albany, the MTA now says these draft concepts are on hold with no further action planned.
4. American Revolutionary War hero Alexander Ketcham honored (newsday.com) — A Revolutionary War lieutenant from Huntington, Alexander Ketcham, has finally been formally honored with a historic marker near the Nissequogue swamp where he was killed on a secret gold mission in 1780. Huntington Town Historian Robert Hughes worked with Smithtown's historian and local researchers for months to pinpoint the site and bring Ketcham's long-overlooked story to light.
