SOUTH HUNTINGTON, NY — Eleven students from school districts across the Town of Huntington were awarded scholarships during the town's 32nd annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration, held Tuesday at Walt Whitman High School.
The Oct. 13 event also recognized nine students with certificates and honored James Calero, director of outreach for St. Hugh Parish and St. Patrick Church, with the Community Service Award.
The celebration, organized by the Town of Huntington in partnership with the South Huntington and Huntington school districts and the Huntington Hispanic Advisory Task Force, marked the culmination of National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed annually from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.
The task force serves as a liaison between local government and the Hispanic community, advising the Town Board on issues affecting residents.
Walt Whitman High School's Jazz Band and Latino Heritage Club dance troupe performed, along with the Huntington High School Chamber Choir and dancers from Huntington High School's United Amigos.
South Huntington Superintendent Dr. Vito D'Elia delivered the keynote address
"Hispanic Heritage Month provides an opportunity for us to recognize the richness and diversity of Hispanic cultures, the histories and traditions that have been passed down through generations, and the countless contributions Hispanic Americans have made to our country," South Huntington Superintendent Dr. Vito D'Elia said.
"What makes this evening especially meaningful is that we are recognizing people in our own community who are carrying that legacy forward," he continued. "The individuals we honor tonight represent the very best of what it means to contribute to something larger than ourselves."
Calero was recognized for his community outreach work through St. Hugh Parish and St. Patrick Church.
"Serving as Director of Outreach has been a privilege and a calling," Calero said. "Every day, I'm reminded that our work is a lot more than providing assistance. It's about restoring hope, and letting those most in need know that they are not alone."
Calero credited parish communities and volunteers for their commitment to helping others.
"This recognition belongs not only to me, but also to the dedicated parish communities, volunteers, and everyone who works tirelessly to serve our neighbors with compassion and love," he said.
