Today marks the official start of hurricane season. Yesterday, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by the American Red Cross Long Island, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano, National Grid and PSEG Long Island here in Suffolk County to provide updates on preparations that we all have taken within our region to gear up for this year’s hurricane season.
As we have experienced the last several years, it is better to be overly cautious and have an established plan ready. Residents are encouraged to take the following safety precautions below so that all families, friends and neighbors are prepared for an emergency event:
- Create a free Smart911 safety profile at Smart911.com, a profile of your household that includes how many people live there and any important medical information that is displayed to first responders when you dial 9-1-1 to facilitate the most efficient response.

- Plan what to do in case you are separated from your family during an emergency and what to do if you have to evacuate. Coordinate with your child’s school, your work and community’s emergency plans.
- Create an emergency preparedness kit with food and water and other basic supplies for each family member to last at least three days. Remember to include essential medications, copies of important documents and special items for children and pets.
