Blue Devil Sports News

The Huntington High School boys’ basketball team opened the season with a non-league loss at Commack last week, 57-38.

The Blue Devils are fielding many new starters on the court this winter and the squad obviously needs time to gel. Commack led 9-8 after the first quarter and held a 25-17 halftime advantage. Huntington was outscored in the second half, 32-21.

Junior Nolan Browne led the Blue Devils with nine points. Junior Shyheim Brewster dropped eight points. Seniors Alex Castillo and Lee Reiver and junior Scott Gulizio had five points each, respectively.  Sophomore Kenny Charles added four points and senior Kevin Montefusco had two points.

The Huntington High School wrestling team will open the season on Saturday (December 14) in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium. The Blue Devils will host six metropolitan area teams in an all-day tournament. The action will begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day.

The tournament will include Massapequa, Northport, Kings Park, Manhasset, Kellenberg and Grant Street Campus. Tournament officials will organize the brackets of each weight class during a meeting Thursday night. Seeds will be given to the top wrestlers to separate them to the extent possible.

Huntington will travel to Glen Cove High School for the Big Red Challenge on Saturday, December 21. The Blue Devils will also compete in the Windsor Christmas Tournament on December 27-28 in Windsor, New York outside of Binghamton.

The first league dual meet is set for Friday, January 3 when Huntington hosts Comsewogue in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium at 4 p.m.

“A Very Talented Golfer”

The Huntington High School golf team is riding a 25 consecutive match winning streak. The Blue Devils won the league championship this fall and qualified many golfers for the county tournament in spring.

Among the Suffolk qualifiers is sophomore Jim Smoot. “Jim is a very talented golfer,” said Mike Marinello, Huntington’s head coach. “His steady improvement over the past year has not been by chance. Jim played in countless tournaments over the summer to improve his game. He has the talent to be All-County and All-State in the spring.”

Smoot came back from five strokes down with only four holes left to win his match and lift Huntington past Half Hollow Hills in a regular season contest this fall.

H-ton Wins Sportsmanship Awards

Several Huntington athletic teams won Section XI Sportsmanship Awards this fall. The Blue Devil varsity girls’ cross country, varsity girls’ soccer, varsity and JV girls’ volleyball and JV girls’ teams were recognized. The J. Taylor Finley Middle School girls’ soccer team was also honored.

Coaches give opposing teams a rating after each contest and file it with the Section XI office, which compiles the scores and announces the result for each sport/league following the conclusion of every season.

Loturco Qualifies for Section XI Championships

Huntington junior Justin Loturco is among the many Blue Devil golfers who have qualified for the Section XI championships in the spring.

“There is no doubt that Justin is a great golfer, but it is his personal qualities that set him apart from the crowd,” head coach Mike Marinello said. “His talents on the course are only rivaled by his excellence in the classroom. Justin is a fierce competitor, but he always demonstrates honesty, integrity and sportsmanship. It is these personal traits that will assure that Justin will be successful in all of his future endeavors.”
