Brand New Long Island Diabetes Day Camp Open for Registration

Camp Hope gives children with diabetes the chance to be like "an average kid."

From August 22 to 26, children from Long Island with diabetes will have the opportunity to experience a camp where they will be surrounded by people who face the same challenges as they do. Camp Hope, a specialized week-long day camp run by the American Diabetes Association for children with type 1 diabetes, will take place at West Hills Day Camp in Huntington, NY.

Campers, who range in age from 7 to 13, will be taught to be responsible with critical diabetes management skills such as glucose check and insulin administration in a medically safe environment. Programming will include health and wellness education and more traditional camp activities like athletics, watersports, zip-lining and arts and crafts.

“The purpose of our camp is to provide a safe environment for children with diabetes to participate in traditional camping fun while meeting other kids like them and learning new ways to manage their diabetes,” said the Association’s development manager, Stephanie Yanes. “They develop confidence, and have fun in an environment that provides adventure and a chance to feel like the average camp kid.”
