Travels with George: In Search of Washington and his Legacy by Nathaniel Philbrick
In time for summer road trip season, join us to discuss this unique blend of history book and travel narrative from the award-winning author of In the Heart of the Sea. In Travels with George, Philbrick retraces Washington’s 1789 presidential tour through the loose and quarrelsome confederation of ex-colonies in an attempt to sell citizens on the new government and the idea of being “American.” Alongside his wife and dog, Philbrick follows Washington from Mount Vernon to the new capital in New York and eventually out onto Long Island (and through Cold Spring Harbor) while considering how the nation’s early history is understood and commemorated today, all while grappling with the moral tangle of Washington’s legacy.

The mission-driven business co-founded by entrepreneur John Cronin, who has Down syndrome, holds its ribbon cutting on June 25 and celebrates with a full Grand Opening Wee-Kend through June 28.
HUNTINGTON VILLAGE, N.Y. — June 2026
For nearly nine years, customers of John’s Crazy Socks have been asking the same question: when are you opening a store? On Thursday, June 25, John and Mark Cronin will finally have the answer ready — in the form of a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. at 328A Main Street, right in the heart of Huntington Village, the community where they live and where the business was born.
The ribbon cutting is held in partnership with the Huntington Chamber of Commerce and kicks off a Grand Opening Wee-Kend — three days of community celebration, music, treats, surprises, and dancing that runs through Sunday, June 28.
“Customers have been asking us for a store since the very first day,” said John Cronin, Co-Founder, President, and Chief Happiness Officer of John’s Crazy Socks. “We are home. Come visit us.”
<h2>A Huntington Business From Day One</h2>
John’s Crazy Socks was founded in December 2016 when John Cronin, who has Down syndrome, finished school and could not find meaningful work. Rather than accept that, John came to his father Mark with an idea: go into business together. They considered a food truck — and quickly ruled it out because, as they like to say, neither of them could cook. Then John had the answer. He had worn crazy socks his whole life. “They are fun, creative, colorful,” John says, “and they always let me be me.”
They opened with a two-week test in December 2016 and shipped 452 orders. They knew they had something. What followed was extraordinary: over 500,000 packages shipped to 94 countries, more than $850,000 donated to charity partners including Special Olympics New York, 33,000-plus five-star reviews, and a team where more than half of the employees have differing abilities.
John was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list and became the first person with Down syndrome to receive the EY Entrepreneur of the Year award. He has testified twice before the U.S. Congress and spoken twice at the United Nations. And through it all, the business has operated out of Huntington.
“This store is a homecoming,” said Mark X. Cronin, Co-Founder and CEO of Abilities Rising, the parent company of John’s Crazy Socks. “John and I live here. This is our community. For the first time, our neighbors can walk in, meet John and our team, and see for themselves what our mission looks like in person. There is no store like it anywhere.”
<h2>More Than a Sock Store</h2>
The new retail location at 328A Main Street — tucked in a charming courtyard just off Main Street — is part of a larger 2,400-square-foot facility that also houses the company’s fulfillment center and podcast studio. It is designed to be a destination, not just a place to buy socks: colorful, fun, and full of energy, with John greeting visitors when he is not traveling for speaking engagements.
The store will also serve as the future home of the Abilities Rising Job Training Academy, which will formally train people with differing abilities for careers in warehouse and retail environments — building on the tour and work group programs that have already served several thousand participants from schools and social service agencies across Long Island and beyond.
Store programming will include community events, a sock design contest where winning designs are turned into real socks, birthday parties, tours and work groups for schools and social service agencies, and ongoing partnerships with other Huntington Village businesses and organizations.
<h2>Grand Opening Wee-Kend Schedule</h2>
Thursday, June 25 — Ribbon Cutting, 1 p.m. The official ribbon cutting with the Huntington Chamber of Commerce. Elected officials and community members are invited to attend. The public is welcome.
Friday, June 26 — Fri-Yay, 1–7 p.m. Treats and surprises, fun kids activities, music, good vibes, and happiness.
Saturday, June 27 — Sock N Roll, 12–5 p.m. John’s Dance Party, new treats and surprises, and more fun and happiness.
Sunday, June 28 — Sunday Funday, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Fun (it’s in the name), treats and surprises, and the most fun and happiness of the weekend.
