Join us for an evening of food, conversation, and connection at our Democracy Dinner, presented by the <a href="https://huntingtonhistoricalsociety.org" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Huntington Historical Society</a> and <a href="https://heckscher.org" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Heckscher Museum of Art</a>!
Inspired by the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the Museum’s 100th Anniversary of Eclipse of the Sun by George Grosz, this community gathering brings people from all walks of life together around a shared table for an open and welcoming dialogue on democracy, liberty, freedom, civic participation, and freedom of expression.
Artists from this year’s <a href="https://heckscher.org/justpowers" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Just Powers: Long Island Biennial 2026</a> exhibition will join as special guests, helping to spark conversation by sharing how these ideas shape their work and creative practices and offering a unique perspective at the intersection of art and civic life.
The evening will feature catering by Gingerbites, a local restaurant serving Haitian cuisine rooted in rich cultural traditions. With Haitian Flag Day (May 18) just days later, the menu offers a meaningful connection to themes of unity, resistance, and pride, highlighting how culture and shared experience can bring people together and deepen conversations around inclusion and belonging.
Whether you are deeply engaged in these topics or simply curious, we warmly welcome you to participate in thoughtful exchange and community building. All are welcome!

The Heckscher Museum of Art

The Long Island Biennial, now in its ninth iteration, deepens connections between artists across Nassau and Suffolk counties and their communities. The exhibition uses the Declaration of Independence (1776) and George Grosz’s masterpiece of political art, Eclipse of the Sun (1926), as touchstones for thinking about power, national ideals, and public life. The Declaration of Independence set forth aspirational principles of liberty and equality, although its promises remain incomplete. A century and a half later, George Grosz’s searing painting exposed the corruption he saw at the heart of modern society. From an open call that attracted nearly six hundred submissions, the guest jurors selected 73 works by 69 artists that respond to these cultural and political legacies. Just Powers brings together the work of Long Island artists with diverse perspectives to reveal how democratic ideals are interpreted, challenged, and reimagined today.
 Just Powers was juried by Tripoli Patterson, founder and owner, Tripoli Gallery; photographer Andreas Rentsch, Associate Professor of Photography and Chair of the Art Department, Lycoming College; and Dr. Lauren Rosati, Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was curated by Dr. Meredith A. Brown, Consulting Curator of Contemporary Art, The Heckscher Museum of Art.
