Secrets of the Archive (Online Lecture)
Wed, July 1 | 7:00PM
If you enjoy detective stories and uncovering hidden histories of historical objects, join us for a fascinating look at how museum researchers pieced together an unexpected story within the collection. Join Alec Lurie, PhD candidate in history at Stony Brook University and Whaling Museum intern, and Collections Manager Baylee Browning for a behind-the-scenes look at the historical detective work that connected three seemingly unrelated objects from the Museum’s archive - a logboat, a paddle, and a journal kept aboard the John H. Jones in 1861. Piece by piece, their research revealed a human story tied to freedom, migration, and the settlement of Liberia. In the spirit of Independence Day, discover how museum teams trace clues across artifacts, documents, and maritime history to uncover the surprising stories hidden within collections!
