Quick action by Centerport volunteer firefighters were credited with saving a home on Mother's Day.

(Centerport Fire Department)
Quick action by Centerport firefighters saved a home on Mother's Day after a fire broke out in the chimney pipe of a fireplace. The Centerport Fire Department responded to the blaze on Harbor Circle at about 3pm and located the fire in the exterior wood enclosure for the chimney. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the chimney enclosure, minimizing damage and saving the home. Under the direction of Assistant Chiefs Andy Heglund and Kyle McLaughlin, 30 firefighters responded with two engines, a ladder truck, heavy rescue truck, an ambulance and fire police. The fire was brought under control within 25 minutes and there were no reported injuries. The Northport and Greenlawn fire departments assisted with standby coverage in Centerport during the alarm. The Town of Huntington Fire Marshal is investigating.
