Cold Spring Harbor HS Magazine Grok Wins National Literacy Award

Grok earned the rank of Superior in the 2023 NCTE Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazine program.

COLD SPRING HARBOR, NY — Grok, the Cold Spring Harbor High School literary magazine, was awarded the rank of Superior in the 2023 NCTE Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazine program by The National Council of Teachers of English, the school district announced.

The winning edition was the 39th volume of Grok, published in April 2023, arranged and edited by editor-in-chief Lauren Maggiore and assistant editors Julia Wang and Henry Zhao.

The judges at REALM evaluated 375 entries from 46 states and five countries. Grok 2023 was one of 21 magazines from New York State to receive a rating of Superior.

"Congratulations to the students and English teacher and adviser April Henry who worked on this outstanding magazine," Superintendent of Schools Jill M. Gierasch said in a news release. "Your
dedication to sharing your love of writing and art is an inspiration to all students."

The mission of NCTE’s REALM program is to publicly recognize excellent literary magazines produced by students with the support of their teachers. REALM is designed to encourage all schools to develop literary magazines that celebrate the art and craft of writing.
