Danger on the High Seas
"accidental Sailor" Nelson Simon recounts his oceanic rescue during what became known as "The Perfect Storm"

Whale men often set out to sea with thoughts of exotic locales and adventure, while the reality was often back-breaking labor, boredom, and dangerous predicaments. Fast forward 150 years, and join us on Thursday, November 9 from 6:30-8:30 pm for a presentation of “The Accidental Sailor,” a first-hand account from guest speaker Nelson Simon, one of a crew of nine who found themselves fighting to stay alive in The Perfect Storm in 1991. Join us as Nelson recounts a harrowing tale of courage, survival, and a historic Coast Guard rescue in the dead of night, after he signed up to be a crew member on-board the Anne Kristine, a 150-year old Norwegian schooner. What he thought would be an easy journey to Bermuda turned into a harrowing near-death experience on the rough sea. Want to learn more? Guests will have a chance to chat with Nelson after the presentation over wine and cheese in the museum’s galleries. $15 suggested donation
