Elderly Man Rescued From Burning Car

Police officers, with the help of good Samaritans, were able to save the man's life. See photos of the scene inside the story.

SOUTH HUNTINGTON, NY — Suffolk County Police rescued a man from a burning car after a crash on Walt Whitman Road Saturday evening.

Phillip Levy, 85, of Melville, was driving a 2010 Hyundai northbound on Walt Whitman Road when he drove into the guardrail around 6:45 p.m., police say. Officers Joelvy Delacruz and Thomas Phelan arrived within minutes and found the car on fire, as well as several good Samaritans trying to help Levy, who was unconscious in the driver’s seat.

The officers, with the help of the good Samaritans, safely got Levy out of the car. Levy was brought to Plainview Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported from the scene.
