Elwood Senior Takes Seat On Board Of Education

ELWOOD, NY — Elwood-John H. Glenn High School senior Ava Hopkins will bring a student perspective to the Elwood School District Board of Education this school year.

Hopkins was welcomed Aug. 27 as the board’s ex officio student member, a nonvoting position that allows a high school student to participate in board discussions and offer recommendations on issues affecting the district’s schools.

A member of the National Honor Society and an All-County cross-country athlete, Hopkins will attend board meetings and represent the perspectives of her fellow students.

The uncompensated student position is mandated by New York State. Hopkins will receive training on board procedures and will not participate in executive sessions.

“This important role ensures that the voice of our students is heard in our decision-making process,” Board President James Tomeo said. “Ava will be serving in this capacity for the remainder of the school year, providing her insight and student perspective.”

After being sworn in by Tomeo, Hopkins immediately began her new role, delivering her first student report to the board with updates from schools across the district.
