Wine Tasting: The Lighter Side of Grenache

Most of us know Grenache as a red blending grape from the Rhone Valley in France... But there are other versions of this expressive varietal in the form of whites and roses. Showing excellent fruit character while maintaining good structure, these are wines of great versatility, especially when paired with food.  A dynamite choice for spring and summer - try these refreshing examples of Garnacha....

Bodegas Abanico “Las Colinas del Ebro” Garnacha Blanca, Terra Alta, Spain
Sourced from 100-year-old vines, fermented and raised in stainless steel, it displays an enticing nose of fragrant minerals, bee’s wax, melon, and white flowers. Medium-bodied, on the palate it has excellent grip, proportion, and length.

Bodegas y Vinedos Ilurce Rosado Rioja, Spain
Lurid pink. Strawberry and raspberry preserves on the nose, with a subtle floral quality in the background. A fat, juicy fruit bomb that packs a solid punch and offers uncomplicated but expressive red berry character. Finishes with lingering sweetness and good persistence.

Vina Sardasol Rosado de Lagrima, Navarra, Spain
A clean wine with a deep pink luster and brash cherry and raspberry aromas. The wine is incredibly fresh and zesty, with orange and nectarine flavors. Nothing is out of place  - a sprightly example of Navarran rosado
