Greenlawn Firefighter Honored For 48 Years Of Service

GREENLAWN, NY — David Caputo, a 48-year veteran of the Greenlawn Fire Department, was honored for his decades of service during the Suffolk County Legislature's annual Volunteer Firefighter Recognition Ceremony on Sept. 16.

Suffolk County Legislator Stephanie Bontempi recognized Caputo as the 18th Legislative District's honoree during the ceremony at the Rose Y. Caracappa Auditorium in Hauppauge.

Caputo joined the Greenlawn Fire Department in June 1978 and has served in numerous roles over nearly five decades.

He became a Hurst Tool Operator in 1979 and a Ladder Operator in 2001. He has maintained his Scott Pak and Bailout certifications, remaining an active interior firefighter throughout his career.

Caputo served as chief of the department from 1997 to 1998 and as fire commissioner from 2000 through 2024. He returned to the commissioner role in 2026 and continues to serve in that capacity.

His leadership has helped guide the department through decades of modernization and growth, including efforts to ensure firefighters have the equipment and training needed to respond to emergencies, according to Bontempi's office.

Caputo's honors include being named Fireman of the Year in 2000 and receiving the Bronze Medal of Valor in 2005. He has also received multiple commendations recognizing his performance and commitment to the department.

“David Caputo represents the very best of our volunteer fire service,” Bontempi said. “His willingness to serve, lead, and protect for almost half a century is nothing short of extraordinary. It is an honor to recognize him at this year’s Volunteer Firefighter Recognition Ceremony.”
