How Approaching Blizzard May Affect Long Island Rail Road Service

Officials say they will work to keep train service running as long as the conditions don't get too harsh.

Long Island Rail Road commuters are advised that train services may be modified or suspended depending on the severity of the Nor’easter expected to hit the region on Tuesday, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The LIRR and Metro-North will make decisions on whether to make changes to services depending on forecast conditions such as snow accumulations, icing and winds to protect equipment and reduce weather-related rail accidents.

For example, if there is snow accumulation of 10 inches or more, the MTA says service on some or all LIRR routes may be temporarily reduced or suspended to clear tracks and avoid stranding trains.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority will monitor updated weather forecasts and work to keep train service running during the expected harsh winter weather conditions.

“We are closely monitoring this storm as it develops and I am directing all state agencies to be on alert and ready to respond as the weather develops,” Cuomo said in a press release.

“I encourage all New Yorkers in affected regions to plan ahead, and avoid any unnecessary travel as the storm progresses,” Cuomo said.
