Huntington Cats Rescued From High-Kill Shelter In Tennessee

These cats found their way out of a high-kill shelter that uses gas chambers and back up to Little Shelter where they are up for adoption.

How did two cats adopted from an animal shelter in Huntington end up in a high-kill shelter in Tennessee?

Chester and Lucy were adopted from Little Shelter years ago and eventually moved down to Tennessee with their family.

Circumstances changed and the family had a baby who was allergic to cats. Chester and Lucy were given up and put in the local town shelter. Down in Tennessee, high-kill shelters use gas chambers to euthanize animals.

Luckily, a few weeks ago, Little Shelter Animal Rescue & Adoption Center received a surprising phone call that two of their cats, Chester and Lucy, were surrendered at the southern shelter. The two cats were microchipped and able to be identified.

Typically, families who want to give up animals adopted from Little Shelter are supposed to contact the animal rescue and adoption center. The family in Tennessee did not follow this protocol, but Chester and Lucy were still able to be rescued thanks to their microchips.

It took two weeks for Chester and Lucy to be flown back to New York. They officially arrived on Tuesday afternoon and were greeted by the staff.

Both cats were found to be happy, healthy and enjoying attention from the staff.

“This just goes to show how important microchipping is, even across state lines a lost animal can be reunited with their family or in this case returned to the rescue group committed to them,” Little Shelter said.

Chester and Lucy are back up for adoption. Little Shelter hopes they can be adopted together since they have known each other for their entire lives.
