HUNTINGTON, NY — The Town of Huntington has been named a 2025 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, recognizing the town’s ongoing commitment to planting, maintaining, and protecting trees across the community.

The designation is part of the Foundation’s Tree City USA program, which is marking its 50th year, highlighting municipalities that prioritize urban forestry as a key part of community planning and sustainability.

“With a network of more than one million supporters, the Arbor Day Foundation has helped plant more than 500 million trees worldwide,” the organization said. “Tree City USA continues to recognize communities that are building healthier, greener, and more resilient environments.”

“For five decades, Tree City USA has rallied passionate local leaders to enhance the livability and sustainability of their communities,” said Michelle Saulnier, vice president of programs at the Foundation. “Tree champions like Huntington are leading the way in shaping a better future through action.”

According to the Foundation, trees serve as critical infrastructure in urban and suburban areas, helping to reduce heat, manage stormwater, improve air quality, and support both physical and mental health. They can also lower energy costs, reduce noise pollution, and increase property values.

“We are proud to once again be recognized as a Tree City USA community,” said Town Supervisor Ed Smyth. “Our commitment to preserving and expanding Huntington’s tree canopy reflects our dedication to public health, sustainability, and enhancing quality of life for our residents.”

To qualify for the designation, municipalities must meet four standards: maintaining a tree board or department, enacting a tree ordinance, investing at least $2 per capita in urban forestry, and holding an annual Arbor Day observance.

The Tree City USA program is operated in partnership with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
