Huntington Prepares For Potential Snow This Weekend: Forecast, Road Prep, Closures

Town officials urge residents to prepare for possible snowfall this weekend, as highway crews ready plows and some MTA work is postponed.

HUNTINGTON, NY — Town of Huntington officials are urging residents to prepare as forecasters monitor the potential for another snow event heading into the weekend.

According to Matt Wunsch, meteorologist with the National Weather Service Office in Upton, snow is expected to begin early Sunday morning and intensify very progressively throughout the day, with 1 to 2 inches of snowfall per hour expected Sunday afternoon. Moderate to potentially heavy snow will continue into the evening, he said, with widespread accumulation of 8 to 12 inches — and up to 15 inches in some spots.

In anticipation of possible snowfall, Highway Superintendent Andre Sorrentino is asking residents to remove vehicles from roadways if snow is forecast, allowing highway crews to thoroughly plow streets from curb to curb.

“If the forecast calls for more snow, please remove cars from the roadside,” Sorrentino said in a statement on social media. “It is important to keep streets as clear as possible so our Highway Department crews can thoroughly plow each roadway curb to curb.”

Residents are also encouraged to work with neighbors to share driveway space if needed, ensuring all vehicles are off the road before plowing begins.

Town officials also advise residents to avoid unnecessary travel during and immediately following snowfall so plowing and de-icing crews can work efficiently.

“With your help, we can get Huntington’s roads safe and passable as quickly as possible,” the town said in a statement on social media.

The MTA has postponed planned Long Island Rail Road work at the Oakwood Road Crossing that had been scheduled from Friday night through early Monday morning due to the forecasted weather.

The work had been set to begin Friday at 10 p.m. and conclude Monday at 4 a.m., but officials said the schedule was delayed because of anticipated inclement conditions.

Residents with questions about the postponed work can contact the MTA at 718-558-7322.

Town officials said they will continue monitoring the forecast and provide updates as conditions develop.

The Incorporated Village of Northport is also under a Winter Storm Watch, with village officials saying in a social media statement that highway crews are standing ready ahead of the anticipated snowfall.

According to village officials, the Northport Highway Department will prioritize clearing main roadways first, followed by secondary streets, as the storm unfolds. Residents are being asked to avoid parking on roadways to allow plows to operate safely and efficiently.

The village noted that PSEG Long Island is bringing in additional resources to restore power quickly should outages occur.

The South Huntington Union Free School District has shared its plan for potential snow days and remote learning if weather conditions force school closures next week.

District officials said the calendar includes one traditional snow day. Any additional closure days would require remote instruction to meet New York State instructional requirements.

The first day of a weather-related closure would be a traditional snow day with no remote instruction. If closures extend into a second day, remote learning schedules would be implemented.

Pre-K students would not have remote instruction.

Students in grades K–8 would follow a truncated two-hour remote learning day, with a mix of live instruction and independent activities. Attendance would be taken during Google Meet check-ins, and students are expected to have cameras on to be marked present.

Students in grades 9–12 would follow a full day of remote instruction. District officials said Huntington High School cannot accommodate shortened days due to Regents exams and other testing schedules.

Parents will receive official notifications through ParentSquare, and students should check Google Classroom for assignments and login information if remote learning is implemented.
