Annual St. Patrick's Day contest brings seniors, officials together as the center marks more than 5 decades serving the community.
HUNTINGTON, NY — The Town of Huntington Senior Center marked St. Patrick’s Day with a beloved tradition Tuesday, hosting its 10th Annual Irish Soda Bread Contest at its facility on Park Avenue.
The event, organized by the Adult Day Care Program, brought together seniors, staff and local officials for a festive celebration of Irish culture, community and culinary creativity.
Contestants presented a variety of Irish soda bread recipes, each showcasing their own twist on the classic dish. A panel of judges — including Supervisor Ed Smyth, Councilman Dr. Dave Bennardo, Receiver of Taxes Jillian Guthman, Councilwoman Jennifer Hebert and Senior Center member Sue O. — sampled entries and selected the top bakers.

The celebration comes as the Senior Center marks 52 years since its founding. Originally opened March 18, 1974 as the Town of Huntington Senior Nutrition Center, the facility was created to provide older adults with a place to gather, participate in activities and enjoy nutritious meals.
Over the decades, the center has expanded its offerings to include daily programming, holiday events, home repair assistance, meal delivery services and programs at the Senior Beach House. Its kitchen now prepares about 250 meals per day.
