Huntington Station Man Charged With DWI After Hit-And-Run Had Son, 4, In Car: Police

Police say the driver fled the scene after striking a parked vehicle while intoxicated with his 4-year-old child in the car.

HUNTINGTON STATION, NY — A Huntington Station man was arrested Wednesday night after leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash that took place while he was driving intoxicated with his son, 4, in the car, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

Police said multiple 911 callers reported a hit-and-run crash at about 8:40 p.m. at the intersection of Ackerman Place and Woodbury Road, where a 2013 Toyota Prius struck an unoccupied, legally parked 2018 Mazda sedan.

When officers arrived, police said they found damage to the rear driver’s side of the Mazda and a piece of the Toyota’s bumper left behind at the scene.

Second Precinct patrol units canvassed the area and later located the Toyota abandoned in the middle of the roadway, parked across the double yellow line, at the intersection of Soundview Road and Hollywood Place, police said.

Police said the driver, Matthew Mezeul, 37, was located a short time later when he returned to his home on Soundview Road. Authorities said Mezeul had his 4-year-old son in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Mezeul was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger under 15 years old, a felony under Leandra's Law; driving while intoxicated; and endangering the welfare of a child, police said. He is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court.

Police said the child was not injured and was released to a family member.
