Huntington's 2019-20 School Budget: What You Need To Know

Huntington residents will vote on the budget in addition to electing two trustees to sit on the Huntington School Board.

HUNTINGTON, NY--Huntington residents will vote on whether or not to pass the 2019-20 school budget on Tuesday, May 21. Here's what you should know before then.

The Huntington School District's proposed spending plan for the 2019-20 school year comes out to $133,488,443. That's a $3.675m, or 2.83 percent, increase from this year's budget.

To fund the increase, the district proposes a tax levy of $110,400,611, up $2.775m or roughly 2.58 percent from this current year's.

Some of the substantial increases proposed are in curriculum development and supervision ($1.869m increase), regular school teaching ($1.38m), instructional salaries ($1.510m) and BOCES ($1.099m).

The proposed budget allocates $372,640 for new text/print resources, $41,900 for new library resources, $93,000 for new computer software and $200,000 for new instructional equipment, including computers and tablet devices.

The more hefty decreases in the proposed budget are regular school supervision ($848,618 decrease), teachers' retirement system ($479,490) and health insurance ($278,100).

State aid is projected to increase by $340,551 up to $17,827,613, a less than two percent increase.

In addition to the school budget, voters will elect two trustees to sit on the Huntington School Board. Current board member Bill Dwyer is running against Michele Kustera and Joseph Mattio. The top two finishers will win election to a three-year term running from July 1 to June 30, 2022.
