Andaluz, or Andaluz The Artist, is a self-proclaimed gamer who was inspired by the widespread craze of Pokémon Go.

“I’ve been waiting to paint the side of the building and wasn’t sure what to do,” Andaluz told Patch. “It was the perfect opportunity.”

Andaluz completed the mural on July 31 with some assistance from his friend Shawn “Sinz” Williams toward the end.

A Facebook video of Andaluz creating the mural has gotten the attention of Pokémon lovers. The video has received more than 60,000 views since Monday, Aug. 15.

“I knew [the video] was going to get big, but I didn’t know it was going to be this big so quickly.”

Pokémon fans from New York City, across Long Island and beyond have traveled to check out the mural.

Kevin Karpowicz shot the video and used his drone for cinematic effects.

Andaluz wanted there to be an inspirational message from the mural as well. “You can do anything you want to do if you work hard at it if you’re persistent,” Andaluz said.

Throughout the mural, there are positive messages that promote unity, like “Don’t Do Drugs,” “Don’t Pokemon Go and Drive” and “Save the Earth.”

About 17 local sponsors were able to to purchase ad slots to be featured in the mural.

Pokémon fans would be happy to know there’s also a Pikachu inside the store. “We’re trying to make it a PokéStop,” Andaluz said.

Andaluz has been an artist his entire life. His business deals with a lot of marketing and promotion to create flyers, banners, signs, window graphics and more. He also has a “side hustle” as Andaluz The Artist.

The local artist has previously used his talents to paint pieces of Robin Williams and Joan Rivers on Jericho Turnpike about a year ago.
