John Glenn High School Names Camila Avila Valedictorian, Ava Haddad Salutatorian For Class Of 2026

ELWOOD, NY — Elwood-John H. Glenn High School has announced Camila Avila as the Class of 2026 valedictorian and Ava Haddad as the salutatorian, recognizing two seniors who have distinguished themselves through academic excellence, leadership, and service to the school community.

Both students have built impressive records both inside and outside the classroom, earning top honors while participating in a wide range of extracurricular activities and leadership roles.

Avila, an AP Scholar with Distinction and a commended student in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program, serves as John Glenn’s all-school secretary and holds leadership positions in both the National Honor Society and World Language Honor Society.

She is also a committee member for the Freshman Buddies program, secretary of the Medical Club, treasurer of Knights for Nature, and captain of the varsity girls' volleyball team. In addition, Avila is an accomplished violinist.

As a junior, she was named a Grand Prize winner of the Optimum and Univision Foundation Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest, earning a $3,000 scholarship.

“I am thrilled to accept this honor, and so thankful to all of my family and teachers who helped make this a fun and exciting process and supported me along the way,” Avila said.

School counselor Janine Ferrante said Avila’s wide-ranging achievements reflect both her talents and dedication.

“Camila is a dynamic individual who excels in the classroom and is passionately involved in the community around her,” Ferrante said. “An athlete, scholar, musician, mentor, and advocate for peers are just a few ways to describe her.”

Haddad, also an AP Scholar with Distinction, serves as all-school vice president, National Honor Society secretary, and co-president of the Best Buddies program, reflecting her commitment to leadership and inclusion.

Beyond school, Haddad completed internships with BAE Systems, where she represented and advocated for women in technology, and at Huntington Hospital.

She is also currently working toward earning her Girl Scout Gold Award, focusing on raising awareness about human trafficking.

“I am so honored to receive this recognition,” Haddad said. “Thank you to all the family, friends, and teachers who have helped me throughout high school.”

School counselor Carolyn Goudreau said Haddad has left a lasting impression through both her academic achievements and her character.

“Ava has demonstrated exceptional academic achievement while making a meaningful impact within the school community,” Goudreau said. “Known for her kindness and compassion, she has built strong relationships with both peers and teachers. Ava’s leadership, empathy and dedication to service make her a valued member of the John Glenn community.”
