  2. Harborfields student named Hispanic Heritage Month contest runner-up. Brynn Gerde, an eighth grader at Oldfield Middle School, was the Eastern Region runner-up for Optimum’s annual Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest, the Harborfields Central School District announced. “I am so proud of Brynn and her writing accomplishment,” teacher Mary-Lynn Karpenske said via news release. “Not only was she able to bring attention to the talents of candlemaker Viviana Alavez, but she was also able to infuse her love of the arts into the essay contest. Her passion for art shines through in all she does, and she is not only able to illustrate beautiful images with a brush, but also with a keystroke. I am honored to be Brynn’s teacher and to be able to watch as her creativity brings ideas to life.”(Huntington Patch)
