As any athlete knows, purchasing sports gear can be hard on the wallet.
But one Half Hollow Hills student is seeing to it that those kinds of expenses don't prevent teens from partaking in sports.
Darci Morello, a junior at Half Hollow Hills High School West, recently launched an “Everyone Can Play” project. In it, she collects gently used sports equipment to donate to students who cannot afford the gear and enable them to participate on teams or try out a new sport.

Community leaders lent their support, including Councilwoman Susan A. Berland and Leg. Steve Stern. Berland donated to the program via the success of the Huntington Youth Council’s “Sport Swap” in March, which in its inaugural year collected gently used hockey, baseball, soccer, lacrosse and figure skating equipment and then allowed residents to shop for equipment amongst the donations.
