LUPINACCI CALLS ON STATE TO RELEASE COPIES OF THE 2014 NEW YORK STATE STANDARDIZED TEST

Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci (R,C,WF,I-Huntington Station) today called on the state to release copies of this year’s standardized tests administered under Common Core. Until 2011, all state tests were posted on the New York State Education Department (NYSED) website.

“When preparing for state testing, teachers and students across the state have found it beneficial to use previous tests as a way to better comprehend the format and questions which they could expect,” said Lupinacci. “As a former school board member, I hear often from teachers who believe strongly in the benefits of reviewing past tests. Since these tests were created with taxpayer money, I see no reason why parents and teachers, who pay taxes to the state, would not have the right to review the material.”

Lupinacci, a former three-term Trustee for the South Huntington Union Free School District, college professor and Ranking Minority Member on the Assembly’s Higher Education Committee, has proposed legislation to make several key reforms to the state’s education system. Assembly Bill 9559, which he authored, would mandate that the commissioner of education post past Common Core and other state standardized examinations on the department's website.

“By practicing with past examinations, students gain a better understanding of the material they need to study. Past tests also help students familiarize themselves with the format and boost confidence, since they will know what to expect,” said Lupinacci.
