Lynx And Leo, Rescued In Hotel Lot, Are Huntington Pets Of The Week

The kittens were a "hot mess" when they got picked up, but they're waiting for their forever home - hopefully together.

HUNTINGTON, NY — Two 6-week-old "fuzzy little tiger kings" are the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter's Huntington Pets of the Week.

Lynx and Leo were rescued by a group of young boys in the parking lot of a major hotel in Islandia, said Debbi Larkin, president of the shelter.

"The kittens were left in a box on a very cold and rainy day," she said. "Fortunately for these furbabies, one of the boys lived in the neighborhood of a well known rescuer in the area. They brought these cuties to this home and we received a call to help, so we set out to see what we could do."

The babies were a "hot mess" when the rescue scooped them up, but the boys were given a warm bath and checked to make sure they were not injured. They were then given a full plate of food that they "gobbled down like they hadn’t eaten in days!" Larkin said.

The boys both weighed in at 1-and-a-half pounds but were then checked by the rescue's in-house veterinarian.

The rescue's foster mother picked up the babies last Wednesday. She was asked to use the letter "L" when naming the boys and to keep them warm, well fed and socialized.

"Lynx is the smaller of the 2 boys, but don’t let his size fool you," Larkin said. "He is very affectionate and will climb right up into your lap to hang out. He is very vocal and when he thinks you are not paying enough attention to him; the whole neighborhood can hear him shouting!"

Lynx loves to play with his "big brother," Leo and will always follow him around.

Leo is on the shy side but he is very curious…sometimes a little bit too much, Larkin said.

"Maybe he is just checking out the living conditions to make sure all is OK for them. He is not as clingy as Lynx, but with a little bit of time that will change. He loves to wrestle with his brother and they can entertain you with their antics."

Lynx and Leo tested negative for FELV and FIV, are wormed, had their first set of vaccines, are litter box-trained and will be ready to be neutered at the beginning of November and then
come directly into the shelter for adoption.

"Since these two babies are so bonded already, we will be encouraging potential adopters to give them BOTH a forever home together," Larkin said.

The rescue is at 3 Verleye Ave., East Northport, and visiting hours are Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

The shelter is also open from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday nights only for those who cannot make it during the daytime hours.

The shelter will also be at the upcoming Huntington Fall Festival on Oct. 7 & Oct. 8, and if the weather cooperates, they may be the stars at the shelter's booth, Larkin said.

"Wouldn’t you love to give these two cutie pies a new forever home…especially since their first home was in a cardboard box in a parking lot on a cold and rainy day? We think they both deserve better than that."
