Man Pleads Guilty To Sexually Abusing Child At Huntington Library

The 8-year-old was standing behind her mother when Christopher Elgut picked the girl up and brought her behind a column, authorities say.

A Huntington man pleaded guilty Thursday to charges related to inappropriately touching an 8-year-old girl at the Huntington Public Library in January 2016, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said.

Christopher Elgut, 29, pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor sex abuse charges, endangering the welfare of a child and unlawful possession of marijuana at a pretrial hearing at criminal court in Riverhead. He is expected to be sentenced to three years in prison and three years post release supervision, the DA said. Elgut will also be required to register as a sex offender.

An order of protection was issued on behalf of the girl.

On Jan. 3, 2016, Elgut approached the 8-year-old, who was standing behind her mother at the counter, picked the girl up, brought her behind a column and touched her inappropriately at 4:30 p.m.

The girl then screamed and Elgut fled the library, located at 338 Main St., on foot.

He was found and placed under arrest a short distance away within 20 minutes of the incident thanks to a description of Elgut that was broadcasted to Second Precinct patrol officers.
