HUNTINGTON, NY — Local charities are the unsung heroes of our communities. Nonprofit and not-for-profit organizations strive to create lasting change and positively impact the lives of those around them.

Some people start organizations as a way to cope with grief, some see an issue they want to tackle, and some want to bring lasting change. Sometimes, all those reasons apply.

Patch wants to highlight your local charity and connect it with community members who want to help and do good, so that way, more people can benefit. Here is just one of many charities doing terrific work in your community.

What is your mission?

We are dedicated to the eradication of breast cancer through education and awareness while helping those who face the challenges that come along with a positive diagnosis.

What does your charity do to further its mission? Please list examples.

Through our environmental health awareness campaign, Prevention Is The Cure™, we educate the community about risk reduction practices, safer alternatives to toxic substances in and around the home, and empower individuals to modify behavior and advance health. The program develops and provides presentations, educational material, and internship opportunities for students.

The Students and Scientists Environmental Research Scholarship Program (SSERSP) engages students in science through training, experiential opportunities with professionals, and message development as they give back to the community. Additionally, though our Lend A Helping Hand program, we help women with services to ease the burdens that come along with a breast cancer diagnosis.

What inspired you to start your charity?

Over 30 years ago, Karen Joy Miller formed this organization with other women in the area who wanted to take a deeper look at WHY we see such a high prevalence of cancers.

How can people help you accomplish your organization's mission or get involved in events?

HBCAC welcomes volunteers for our programs, college-level interns as mentors, and high school students to join our Students and Scientists Environmental Research Scholarship Program.

What is the most memorable moment you've had since starting your organization?

The most rewarding moments are when we hear back from students who participated in our program and we see real-time how the experiences with HBCAC impacted them and how they applied it to their career goals to make a difference in the world.
