The News Conference: Real & Powerful brings the news to you

Plan to Attend Fair Media Council's Dec. 3 Event to Learn, Connect & Support the Need for Responsible News Coverage

CNN Senior Political Analyst John Avlon and Margaret Hoover, CNN political commentator and host of PBS’ The Firing Line, will be the featured luncheon speakers at Fair Media Council’s The News Conference: Real & Powerful on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 8 am to 4 pm at the Garden City Hotel.

For the record: Avlon’s an independent. Hoover, who is the great grand-daughter of Herbert Hoover, the 31st president of the United States, is a conservative. Oh, one more thing: They’re married.

The News Conference kicks off with a town hall-style breakfast forum, sponsored by Protiviti, focusing on how the news media lost trust with the American public and what it’s doing to win it back. Panelists will be BuzzFeed.News Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith, ProPublica President Richard Tofel and Sree Sreenivasan, Loeb Visiting Prof. of Digital Innovation, Stony Brook University.
FMC CEO & Executive Director Jaci Clement will moderate both the breakfast and luncheon conversations, and take questions from the audience.

The day includes 12 panel discussions to increase the media savvy of business and community leaders. Topics range from transparency in news today to navigating the media landscape. Sessions on crisis management, how to pitch a news story and inside the coverage of politics are perennial favorites of event attendees. Breakfast is sponsored by Protiviti, the event's Community Advocate sponsor. Mount Sinai-South Nassau is the networking sponsor. Muck Rack and Long Island Business News are media sponsors.

Opportunities to be a sponsor, exhibitor and program advertiser are still available. The advertising deadline is Nov. 8 by 5 p.m.

“This program is the largest event in the country to bring news media and the public together for a day of open dialogue, to build mutual understanding and respect,” said Clement.

Story pitching, relationship building, and opportunities to land media interviews happen throughout the day.

More than 400 business and community leaders, generally with a director title and above, attended last year’s event, along with local, regional and national news media.

Attendees who complete the day are eligible to receive certification in communications leadership, communications strategy or communications management. For more information, click here.
