'NY To Make It Impossible' Carrying Gun: Atty. On SCOTUS Ruling
The Supreme Court decision struck down a law from more than a century ago that would allow New Yorkers to carry handguns in public.

MELVILLE, NY — With the Supreme Court upending a century-old law in New York for gun carrying in public, Patch got some insight from an attorney who specializes in gun rights cases.
"It is improper for New York state to require an individual to explain why they need to carry a gun in public," Michaelangelo Matera of Matera Firm in Melville said of the justice's ruling.
Matera said the 6-3 decision opens the door for people with licensed firearms to bring them into most places.

In the majority opinion, sensitive areas for carrying guns were left for determination by the states.
"A state like New York is going to try to ban as many places as possible, in essence, make it impossible for someone to carry a weapon outside of their home," he said.

While shootings are on the rise, Matera said, "the vast majority of the situations involving gun violence are by individuals who are not legally licensed to carry that firearm."
