Event: Colon Cancer Awareness: What Everyone Should Know

Description: Dr. Shabiah Martin, a Northwell Health colorectal surgeon, will discuss preventing, diagnosing, and treating colorectal cancer as well as explain the differences between colon and rectal cancer. Risk-reducing strategies, the importance of colonoscopy, the role of surgery in colorectal cancer, and the cutting-edge technologies being used to benefit patients will be covered. Description: Tai Chi is a Chinese form of exercise that helps reduce tension, improve balance, and increase vitality. It incorporates breathing with slow, fluid movements, emphasizing correct posture and body mechanics. By placing our mind on our movements, we start to learn how to control ourselves. Description: This month’s selection is "Hamnet: A Novel of the Plague" by Maggie O’Farrell. An unnamed Latin tutor falls in love with Agnes, a young woman with a gift for healing. She urges him to London where his gifts as a writer for the stage are just beginning to awaken when their young son, Hamnet, succumbs to bubonic plague. Description: Lise Meitner, born into a Jewish family, was an Austrian and later Swedish physicist who worked on radioactivity and nuclear physics. She was one of the great experimentalists of her day. Meitner is the unsung hero of nuclear fission, having played an essential role in its 1938 discovery. She faced both gender and racial discrimination, yet never ceased to pursue her work, the science that was the passion of her life. Edward Sierra will offer an engaging and informative presentation as he dips you into the life and science of Lise Meitner. Registration required and open to all.
