Person Found Dead In Dix Hills House Fire; Basement Blaze Traps Victim: Police

A homeowner, 3 Suffolk police officers, and 2 Dix Hills firefighters were hurt in the early-morning blaze, police said.

DIX HILLS, NY — A person was killed in an early-morning house fire in Dix Hills on Tuesday, and Suffolk County police said the cause appears to be non-criminal.

Officers responded to a 911 call reporting a fire at 6 Talisman Drive at around 3:28 a.m, according to Suffolk County police.

When officers arrived, homeowner Barbara Dugan told police that her daughter lives in the basement apartment of the home, police said.

Officers and firefighters tried to reach the basement apartment but were unsuccessful, according to police. A person was later found dead in the basement.

The identity of the victim will be determined by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office, police said.

Dugan, 85, was taken to Huntington Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Three Suffolk County police officers were also treated and released from a hospital for smoke inhalation, police said. Two Dix Hills firefighters suffered non-life-threatening injuries as well.

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Section detectives are investigating the fire. Police said the cause remains under investigation, but it appears to be non-criminal.
