Huntington Boys and Girls Track Claim Division Championship Titles

The girls team made history by winning its first ever Suffolk Division Championship title.

The Huntington Girls Track and Field team earned its first Division Championship title in school history by winning the Suffolk Division II Championships by just two points on Thursday.

The Blue Devils narrowly defeated East Islip after two days of track and field events.

The stiff competition gave the Huntington athletes the extra push to fight all the way until the end, said head coach Shawn Anderson.

“That was one of the most exciting meets I have ever been a part of,” he told Patch.

The team was crowned League Champions earlier in the season.

The Huntington Boys Track and Field team claimed a Suffolk Division II Championship title of its own Friday. The team edged out second place Eastport-South Manor 98-86.

Meet highlights for the girls:

Day 1:

  • Suzie Petryk and Katie Nugent placed first and second in the 800m.
  • Nicole Abbondandelo placed third in the 3,000m.
  • Nina Cartwright managed a personal best of 91’2’’ in the discus.

Day 2:

  • Petryk placed first in the 2,000m steeplechase.
  • Petryk placed second in the 1,500m and Abbondandelo placed fifth.
  • Latoya Shand placed fourth in the 400m.
  • Alex Koumas placed second and set a school record in the 400 hurdles with a time of 65.06.
  • Betty Huitt placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 34’8.50’’.
  • The 4x800m relay (Katie Nugent, Alexandra Koumas, Nicole Abbondandelo and Suzie Petryk) placed first with a time of 9 minutes and 38 seconds.
  • The 4x100m relay (Samantha Glicker, Lexi Mills, Maliyah Davis-Coddington and Marina Ruzi) placed sixth with a time of 52.47 seconds.
  • The 4x400 team (Anna Gulizio, Alexis Pastorelli, Latoya Shand and Katie Nugent) had a school record-breaking first place finish. The relay team defeated runner-up West Babylon by 65/100ths of a second, with a time of 3:59.64. Huntington would have tied with East Islip for the overall title if the Blue Devils did not come out victorious. If they placed third, the team would have lost.

“Again, each and every girl laid out their best efforts on the track and had some absolutely stellar performances,” Anderson said. “With such a historic day, it will be fun to see how we do at the State Qualifier meet.”

Meet highlights for the boys:

  • Infinite Tucker won the 110m hurdles and the 400m dash and placed second in the long jump.
  • Scott Guliziop placed second in the 1600.
  • Joe Saginaw tied for second in pole vault.
  • Kyree Johnson placed second in the 100m and 200m dash and placed third in long jump.
  • The x400m relay team (Exayvian Crowell, Kyree Johnson, Scott Gulizio and Infinite Tucker) won gold and defeated Half Hollow Hills West by less than a second.
  • Kyle O’Brien placed fifth in the 3200m.
  • Exayvian Crowell placed second in the 400m hurdles and sixth in the 110m hurdles.
  • Matteo McNeil placed fifth in shot put.
  • Sonday Jean-Baptiste placed sixth in the pentathlon.

The State Qualifier meet will be held on Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6 at Port Jefferson.
