Running Up 86 Floors of the Empire State Building

Taking it one step at a time

Next time you step foot in an escalator or on an elevator

in a department store, hospital, or apartment building maybe give a thought for a moment about taking the stairs. It’s usually the last thing we think of when given the opportunity, because it is a bit harder and is less convenient to getting to our final destination.

On February 7, 2018, Michelle Nickerson will be doing just that. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator up, but instead of climbing up to the 3rd floor of an office building, she will be ascending the 86 floors (1576 steps) to the top of the iconic New York City landmark, The Empire State Building.

Stair climbing has many benefits to it. It's officially classed as a 'vigorous' form exercise and burns more calories per minute than jogging. It also raises your heart rate immediately thus maximizing your cardio benefits. Increases core muscle strength: Climbing stairs is a great way to amp your core muscle strength. — glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps, abs and calves to exercise and thus tones your body better.

This year is the 41st year of the Empire State RunUp and the world’s first and most famous tower race will be held February 7, 2018 in New York City. This race challenges athletes from around the globe to race up the stairs of the building with some of the fastest men and women completing this feat in just 10 minutes!!!

Michelle will be running up the 1576 steps for the charity Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). They are a world leader in helping people with physical challenges lead active and healthy lifestyles, CAF believes that participation in physical activity at any level increases self-esteem, encourages independence and enhances quality of life. Some of these outstanding athletes from around the globe will also be running up the Empire State Building as well.

So tomorrow, why not take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator?
