Saint Anthony's H.S. Dedicates New Sports Facility
James C. Metzger Stadium will be used for practices and games.
This past Saturday, Saint Anthony’s High School in South Huntington cut the ribbon to dedicate and bless its new sports facility. The James C. Metzger Stadium at the intersection of Pigeon Hill, Wolf Hill and Old Country roads includes a turf playing field, low-rise bleachers and an electronic scoreboard. The field will be used for practices by school teams and for day games by both Saint Anthony’s teams and community teams.
The approximate $1.2 million field is named for benefactor James C. Metzger, a former star Long Island high school and college athlete who now is the chairman and chief executive of The Whitmore Group, a leading insurance brokerage firm in Garden City.
Though not a graduate of Saint Anthony’s, Metzger was raised nearby and frequently played various sports in the parks and fields located in the shadows of the school. Metzger always admired the education and athletic tradition that Saint Anthony’s offered to students, and it is this commitment that convinced him to provide the lead gift for the construction of the sports facility. Metzger played for Half Hollows Hills East High School and Hofstra University.
