CENTERPORT, NY — A fire broke out in the bedroom of a Centerport home on Sunday night.
The Centerport Fire Department responded to the Van Buren Street home around 9 p.m., according to P.I.O. Steve Silverman. With assistance from other fire departments and 50 firefighters overall, the blaze was brought under control in 15 minutes and contained to just the one bedroom. No one was injured.
The rapid response of the Centerport Fire Department effectively saved the home, Silverman said. Second Assistant Chief Kyle McLaughlin credited the firefighters who were able to quickly and successfully put out the fire.

"There was great teamwork, and thanks to our neighboring departments for their assistance," he stated.
Lieut. Nick Feeley, an ex-chief of the department, was the first firefighter to arrive. He entered the home and closed the door to the bedroom to prevent the fire from spreading. He then used a fire extinguisher to hold back the flames until the arrival of Engine 2-6-2, whose crew stretched a hoseline into the house and knocked down the blaze. Three engines, a ladder truck, heavy rescue, ambulance and paramedic unit were dispatched and under the direction of McLaughlin.
