Suffolk Residents Can Apply to Be a Deputy Sheriff

Filing for the next Deputy Sheriff exam is open.

Suffolk County residents interested in becoming a Deputy Sheriff are now able to sign up for the next available exam, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday.

A Deputy Sheriff in Suffolk County is responsible for making arrests transporting prisoners, serving legal processes, patrolling highways and securing court detention facilities.

Deputy Sheriffs receive their assignments and special orders from superior officers who review work methods and results through reports, inspections and discussion

The last reported average salary of a Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff was $30,015 in 2010, according to the job information.

The last day to file for the exam is April 20. The test will take place on June 11.

To qualify for the position, applicants must:

  • Live in Suffolk County
  • Be a United States citizen
  • Have a valid New York State driver’s license
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent that is recognized by the New York State Department of Education
  • Have a clean record (Those convicted of a felony will be barred from appointment and those who have been convicted of a misdemeanor may be barred from employment.)
  • Must be at least 19 years and 6 months old or younger than 35 on or before the date of the written test
  • Complete a Police Officer Training course

Those who earn a passing grade will then have to pass several other qualifying tests and evaluations, including a medical assessment, personality assessment, physical fitness screening and an extensive background check.
