Suffolk’s ‘Ladies Of The Legislature’ Launch Countywide Women’s History Month Clothing Drive
The countywide March initiative will support women facing economic hardship and career transitions.

HAUPPAUGE, NY — Five members of the Suffolk County Legislature are joining forces this March to honor Women’s History Month with a countywide clothing drive aimed at supporting women facing economic hardship or career transitions.
Legislators Leslie Kennedy, Trish Bergin, Stephanie Bontempi, Ann Welker, and Rebecca Sanin — known as the “Ladies of the Legislature” — are collecting donations of new or gently used women’s clothing throughout March at their respective district offices.
The drive begins March 1 and runs through March 31. Residents are encouraged to donate professional attire, everyday clothing, outerwear, shoes, handbags, and accessories. Donations will be accepted during regular business hours at each participating district office.

All collected items will be distributed to organizations across Suffolk County that assist women working toward stability, independence, and renewed confidence.
In a statement, Bontempi, who represents the 18th Legislative District and is hosting collections at her Huntington district office, said the initiative is about helping women take meaningful steps forward.

“By coming together to support this initiative, we are helping local women take meaningful steps toward stability, opportunity, and build confidence,” Bontempi said. “I appreciate everyone who is able to donate and make a real difference for organizations that support women in our community.”
Women’s History Month traces its origins to 1981, when Congress first designated a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987, the observance was expanded to the full month of March. Since 1995, presidents have issued annual proclamations recognizing Women’s History Month and celebrating the contributions women have made throughout American history.
Organizers said the clothing drive is both a symbolic and practical way to honor those contributions while directly supporting women and families in need locally.
For more information, residents may contact their local legislator’s district office. Bontempi’s office can be reached at 631-854-4500.
