Town of Huntington Looks to Restrict Airbnb, Other Short-Term Rentals

A public hearing will be held next month to discuss the proposed Town Code changes.

Huntington residents are invited to attend a meeting to discuss proposed Town Code changes that would affect transit short-term rentals, such as Airbnb, HomeAway and VRBO.

The Town says changes need to be made because these short-term rentals “detrimentally affect the quality of life in the neighborhoods" they are in.

These regulations would protect the “health, safety and welfare of residents and the community at large,” the Town says.

The Tuesday, Jan, 10 hearing will discuss two proposed changes:

  1. Town Code would prohibit accessory apartments from being used as transit rental properties. This proposal is sponsored by council members Mark Cuthbertson and Tracey Edwards.
  2. Town Code would prohibit the issuance of rental permits to transient rental properties.

A transit rental property is defined as any residential property rented for 30 days or less.
