Trustees Vote to Leave Huntington School Board Seat Vacant
The seat will remain vacant for the 2014-15 academic year, officials said.

The Huntington School School Board voted Monday at the J. Taylor Finley Middle School to leave Adam Spector’s seat vacant for the 2014-15 school year, officials said.
Spector, who was re-elected to a three-year term in May, passed away before the July 1 swearing-in of the board.
“His loss has been felt across the district, especially among his family, friends and fellow trustees as well as the administrators he worked closely with,” the school district reported on its website.

School board trustees had several options regarding the vacant seat according to the law, officials said. They could hold a special election to fill the vacancy, a move that could cost as much as $20,000 to cover the related costs. They could also appoint a community member to fill the seat until the next scheduled election. Or they could leave the seat vacant until the next election.
The trustees voted 5-0, with William Dwyer unable to attend the meeting as he was away on business, to leave the seat vacant for the 2014-15 year.

Residents will have the chance to vote for a new trustee to fill the remaining portion of Spector’s term in May 2015. There will be three other trustee positions up for election as well at that time.
