Walt Whitman Marching Band Honored for Historic Performance

The 70-piece band ensemble captured their first ever New York State Championship title in October.

The Walt Whitman High School Wildcats Marching Band started their season with a performance worthy of the record books by placing first in the Long Island band competition held in Manhasset on Oct. 10.

The 70-piece band then officially made history by capturing their first ever New York State Championship title on Oct. 18 in Woodbridge, NJ.

Councilman Mark Cuthbertson presented the ensemble with a proclamation on Tuesday for their accomplishments at the Town Board Meeting.

“Congratulations to the Wildcats Marching Band, the Walt Whitman High School, staff and proud parents. Best wishes for a repeat performance in the New Year,” Cuthbertson said in a press release.

The band is led by Allen Dietz, the band’s coordinator, and the co-directors Caitlin Coumatos and David Pettas. The band scored 78.075 in the Long Island Competition and took top honors in three Caption Awards for Best Music and Visual Performances and Best Overall Effect.

In the state championships, the Wildcats brought home their first ever First Place win with a score of 86.4 for Best Visual and Musical Performances, Best Overall Effect and Best Color Guard.
